Pressure Care Options
NB: Our pressure care information is for guidance only. Any product selection should be based on a comprehensive clinical assessment of the person.
It should be noted that the condition of patients can change so regular reassessment is vital to ensure that the prescribed equipment remains appropriate.
The most important consideration is purchasing a chair which is tailored to fit end user width, depth, height requirements as closely as possible to ensure the optimum sitting position and distribute body pressure as evenly as possible. Many chair purchasers sit for long periods which may in some cases cause circulatory problems, discomfort and potential tissue damage. A.J.Way standard foams are firm, high density and of excellent quality but for clients at risk of pressure ulcer development the following options should be considered:
It moulds itself to a person’s shape and size helping reduce pressure points and spread body weight more evenly across the whole surface of the cushion. The supporting layer of Reflex melamine-free foam improves support and flexibility for the upper layer of Vasco.
The Vasco foam may also be used in the seat/legrest wrap portion of a riser recliner chair.
NB: this must be upholstered in Nytend vapour permeable material & supplied as a loose cushion only.
Pair of supports shaped to fit around sitters’ side & back, upholstered to match chair & velcroed to long weighted flap of material which sits over backrest of chair to allow height adjustment. Supports may be moved in or out to maximise sitter's stability in chair & should be held in place by arms/filled sides of chair.
Please state full specification of chair on which they will be used. Suitable for high seat or riser recliner chairs, but chair ideally does need filled-in sides to hold them in place.
12Wings may be fitted to most models where non-standard and may be useful if the sitter has a doze! They also help protect the neck from draughts. NB: If the sitter has very wide shoulders these may occasionally prove restrictive.
16Armcaps - Pair of armcaps for riser recliner chairs.
NB: These are a loose fit and may not fit snugly. Please note they may slip during the rising movement of the chair and we advise removing them before operating the seat rise action to ensure user safety.
Handsets
19Keylock Handset whereby handset is inoperable if the key is removed from the key slot as a safety precaution to prevent inappropriate use of the chair.
NB: It is important to check that the key could not accidentally be removed without the sitter’s knowledge so that the person is not left stranded in the chair.
20Detachable Handset whereby the entire handset may be removed to prevent inappropriate use of the chair.
NB: It is important to check that the key could not accidentally be removed without the sitter’s knowledge so that the person is not left stranded in the chair.
22Handset Pocket may be supplied as an optional extra if this is easier to access than standard handset loop.
NB: Handsets may also be attached to the front or top of the arm by Velcro if required - please supply a diagram to indicate position required.
Battery Backup Systems
23Battery Backup Systems All our riser recliner chairs come complete with basic battery backup which can only be used once on a set of batteries and should return the chair to normal sitting position in the event of power failure (provided the batteries are fitted, connected & have full charge). In areas where there are frequent power cuts we strongly recommend you consider a rechargeable battery backup pack (23) or an AccuPack system (24) as an optional extra. The rechargeable battery backup unit plugs into the transformer. When fully charged it should allow approximately 30 - 40 operations of the chair.
24AccuPack mains independent power supply enables a chair to be run without the need for trailing wires or a power socket in close proximity. The AccuPack unit needs recharging once or twice a week for up to 8 hours overnight, or as convenient, & will then give 50 - 80 cycles of the chair on a charge. When charge is low there is an audible alarm at which point there is sufficient power for 2-3 operations. The chair may be operated whilst the battery unit is being recharged & there is no need to discharge the batteries completely to prolong their life. AccuPack enables flexibility in chair positioning, removes the need for trailing cables by day & doubles as a meaningful battery backup system. The lead gel battery is fitted underneath the chair & the charging point is on the back of the armrest as illustrated.
25Hazard Sensor Device - Available on all A.J.Way riser recliner chairs except Multi 6, the hazard sensor consists of a sensor strip around the underside of the chair base which detects an obstacle in its way as the chair is lowered. The chair action stops & lifts slightly away from any obstacle
NB: This does not cover the scissor action of the legrest. We strongly recommend a hazard sensor be considered in houses where young children live or visit regularly. Children must in any case be supervised at all times in the proximity of a riser recliner and should never be left unattended by or allowed to play with such a chair.
26Rise Only/Recline Only Motors - If required these may be obtained for clients for whom the rise or recline function could pose a danger.
28Detachable Wrap - All the armchair riser recliners may be supplied with the option of a detachable wrap to assist cleaning or to allow the wrap to be replaced should it become soiled. This wrap is fastened with Velcro behind the back of the seat and underneath the end of the legrest.
29Rubber Wheels - Two front swivel and two rear lockable rubber wheels may be fitted to riser recliner chairs (rear lockable only on Multi 6) to minimise skidding on wood, laminate & vinyl flooring. A must for hospital use.
30Polyurethane Castors may be fitted in place of castors to help prevent the chair moving on a wooden, laminate or vinyl floor.
NB: These obviously make it more difficult to move the chair for cleaning purposes.
31Non-slip Glides may be fitted in place of castors to help prevent the chair moving on a wooden, laminate or vinyl floor. NB: These obviously make it more difficult to move the chair for cleaning purposes
32Wooden Handgrips may give added confidence when rising or sitting as they are easier to hold on to than the fully upholstered arms
33Detachable Legrest Pillow - A hollowfibre pillow which is strapped around the upholstery on the lower section of legrest to give additional softness and height to elevated legrest. May be removed if no longer required.
34Occupancy Sensor - Pressure mat may be incorporated within chair cushion to indicate when a user has left the chair.
35Heat Pads (one in the seat and two in the back) may be incorporated in the back of most riser recliners if required (not suitable for waterfall back chairs or Multi 6). These require a second handset with three buttons.
